When you arrive at Kanaha Beach Park, you are stunned by the technicolor water and stunning mountain backdrop. Then you get to watch the kite surfers with their colorful sails zooming past, one after another in a circle. It's very fun! Walk the beach and you will find large pieces of coral, and even whole piles of coral at Wing Beach on the eastern end! At the edge of the narrow strip of white sand is an ironwood forest, where you can go for shade. Local families have huge gatherings on the large lawns shaded by trees. There are also sand volleyball courts and a canoe club pavilion, plus restrooms.
The only downside is that it's always very windy. This keeps you cool on hot days, but makes swimming a little less appealing.
While waiting for your flight, you can come and bid farewell to Maui here. It is a five minute drive from the airport.
Buy a sandwich at Whole Foods Market, a five minute drive west, and bring it here for a picnic.
This beach is special on Maui because there aren't many beaches with shade. Often you feel that there is nowhere to go in the middle of the day if you have had enough sun. Another good place to go if you've had enough sun is Maui Ocean Center, an excellent aquarium 18 minutes south.
Kanaha Beach Park is located at Amala Place (just east of Kaa Street cross street), Kahului, Maui. There are two parking lots. Google maps GPS takes you to the right place even though there is no street number.
