Brickell Ave in Downtown Miami is where many international consulates and banks are clustered. In fact, it has more international banks than any other city in America. Brickell Key, a gated island (that you can walk the perimeter of on a lovely path), lies just across a short causeway, and creates pretty views for many of the high-rise offices. It's wonderful to walk along Brickell Ave and look up at the unique shapes of the glistening glass skyscrapers. The entry pillars in front of the W Miami Hotel are a sight to see, and the grand silver columns in front of 701 Brickell Ave are nice too. There are plenty of cafes to choose from, where you can watch the smartly-dressed business people walking by. Check out Mary Brickell Village, an outdoor mall in a densely-populated area with many eateries. A block further, Granier Bakery is on a tree-lined section at the 900 and 1000 block of Brickell Ave- it's lovely to sit inside or outside, admiring the skyscrapers above. The counter-service staff are sweet, and the food is excellent. Pasion del Cielo Coffee is also in this leafy area.

This area is growing very rapidly with new residential buildings. There are 80,000 residents, who use the walking paths and hang out at the cafes. A fantastic walking or running path is the River Walk Trail which runs along the Miami River starting at Brickell Point. From there you can run the path around Brickell Key. Skyscrapers, palm trees, and emerald green water really do look good together!
At night, enjoy a drink at one of the roof-top poolside bars, such as the bar on the 16th floor of the Kimpton EPIC Hotel where friendly staff from South America tip their hats to you as you walk in (warning: crowded valet parking pullup, expensive parking even after validation).
Nearby check out Bayside Marketplace, a touristy spot with restaurants and shops on the waterfront, a 22 minute walk north. Or go for a dip at 7th Street Beach! It's a 20 minute drive away. Eat at Shake Shack, which has such yummy burgers with cheese melted perfectly over them, plus good chocolate malt shakes to share.
