Storyland is one of the coolest places I've ever been to. It is everything that imagination is made of. In the middle of a forest of  giant moss-draped oak trees and lush green vines is a wonderland of whimsical sculptures from all your favorite fairy tales. My daughter was so excited and inspired by this place that she almost couldn't contain her joy! I felt the same way. It was the evening, which I think made it even more mystical. You can enter through a gate from Carousel Gardens if you want to enter later in the day when Storyland is usually closed. As you walk around, you will see the village of the Three Pigs, the Little Mermaid poised on a rock in the clear water, the Old Woman who lived in a shoe (which you can walk through), the cow that jumped over the moon, a dragon which is a slide, Jack and Jill who walked up the hill (also a slide), Mother Goose flying amongst the treetops, Pinocchio on the mouth of the whale, Cinderella's pumpkin carriage and the coachman rat, a pirate ship (which you can climb aboard), Rapunzel, Snow White asleep by the dwarves' house, a rocket ship, a spider, and a gingerbread house. Storyland is located in City Park, where you can walk stone bridges over the bayou and enjoy the trees, some of them over 600 years old! With your Storyland ticket, you can also enter Carousel Gardens and the New Orleans Botanical Garden which has a model train area that kids love.
To get out of the heat, check out Louisiana Children's Museum, a super fun place for kids.
