The Eno River in Hillsborough is kind of muddy, slow-moving, and uninspiring. But at Eno River State Park in Durham, the river is nicer. It flows, sparkles a bit, and there are rocks for kids to play at the shore. The forest here is pretty, with a wide, well-kept path made visually appealing by lots of tree roots. Sometimes there are huge patches of flowers growing in the trees. This is a hike, not a paved walk, though it's fairly easy. The best part of Eno River State Park is the swinging pedestrian bridge. You can walk over it pretending you are Indiana Jones.
For directions, see below. To get to the bridge is only about a 250 meter walk from the parking lot, and then there are more trails you can take from there if you're inclined.
After, have lunch at Mad Hatter Cafe and Bakeshop, a fourteen minute drive away, near Duke East Campus.
Eno River State Park is located at 6101 Cole Mill Rd, Durham. There is a large parking lot. From there you can take the Cox Mountain Trail, which takes you above the river for about 250 meters, and then to the swinging bridge and the rocks on the shoreline.
