Pioneer Village is a cute collection of historic cabins, barns, and a church, in an open field by Shingle Creek. When we were there the fence was closed so you couldn't get close to the buildings, but we had a great walk on the hard-packed dirt paths. The paths are not very shady so come on a cloudy day. The vegetation is quite dry- an open field and oak trees dotted about. Some of the oak trees are huge and beautiful, with picnic tables beneath. There is a tall playground that looks fun, though no one was on it when we visited.
Past the playground is a path that goes in a loop. Two other paths, on either side of the historic village, take you to Shingle Creek. Here you can find a canoe landing in one spot and a pedestrian bridge over the creek in another spot. If you take this bridge, you can walk 1.5 miles in either direction, along the creek, which is more like a river. If you go south along the creek, you come to Steffee Landing. If you go north, you follow a path along the river to a residential culdesac. We only walked to the canoe landing and near the historic village, but we can't wait to explore the path on the other side of the bridge on a cloudy day!
If you need a shady walk, park at Steffee Landing instead. It's a gorgeous wooden boardwalk through a swamp with tropical trees galore.
To see more wildlife and animals than you saw at Pioneer Village (we didn't see any), check out Gatorland, which has a wetland full of alligators and birds, though it's not free to visit. It is a 17 minute drive north from Pioneer Village.
Pioneer Village (also called Pioneer Village at Shingle Creek, or Osceola County Pioneer Village, or Shingle Creek Babb Landing- yes the names are so confusing around here!) is located at 2491 Babb Rd, Kissimmee, FL 34746. There is plenty of free parking.
