Leucadia Town is a fun area along Coast Highway 101 in Encinitas, with bright cafes, and beaches just a short walk away. My favorite coffee shop is Pannikin Coffee & Tea with its golden yellow umbrellas and many outdoor spots to chill. It is located in a historic yellow building, and has delicious, filling muffins and treats. Check out Neel's Nursery across the side street. It has a little stream, arches, and lovely flowers. Walk along Coast Highway past tall wildflowers, more restaurants, and a bright mural with hibiscus flowers, and you reach Nectarine Grove, a wonderful cafe with picnic tables and heat lamps outside, where you can have delicious pizza. They are open for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. The only bad thing about Leucadia town is that the cafes are along the main highway so there is some noise from cars, and the views of the railroad tracks are a bit ugly.
Walk over to Leucadia State Beach (Beacon's Surf Break) for a gorgeous sight. You stand at the top of very high cliffs and listen to the waves pull the huge pebbles back and forth. Take the steep path down, past wildflowers of many hues. You can sit on the pebbles and delight in the fun scene of surfers jumping into the waves. I stayed a very long time, loving every minute of this beautiful spot.
To walk to the beach from the cafes, walk up Europa Street or Leucadia Blvd until you reach Neptune Ave. Then walk to the right. On the walk you can pass 224 El Portal Street, to see an eccentric garden with a tiny Volkswagen van planter and other cute sights.
You can park along Coast Highway 101, if you come early enough before the meal rush times. I parked at 726 Coast Highway 101, and walked everywhere from there.
Pannikin Coffee & Tea, open daily 6-6.
Nectarine Grove, open daily 7-7, or one hour later on Fri and Sat.
