Ocean Beach has a happening, alternative, funky beach scene. Students gather, such as at the coffee shop called Newbreak, to study and enjoy the good vibes. There are quite a few men living in vans that also hang around. This is definitely not a snooty scene, but a place for the partying kind.
The beach is good for a long walk, as it goes on for miles, and there are views of distant headlands. Surfers check out the waves, while dog lovers let Fido enjoy some nature at the Dog Beach on the northern end where the channel comes out into the ocean.
There is a long cement pier and some rock jetties. Some amazing things wash up on the shore, such as giant kelp balls.
There is free parking in the beach park, which is always a good thing in San Diego.
Newport Ave is the main street and is lined with California palms. Here you can find surf shops, an Irish pub called The Harp, cafes, and a popular youth hostel.
For another happening spot, check out Mission Beach.
Ocean Beach Park is located at 1965 Abbott St, San Diego CA 92107.
