Dog Beach is a popular beach with dog owners, on the channel that leads into Mission Bay. It is just steps from Ocean Beach Pier. Here you will find lots of open space and expansive dunes. As soon as you exit your car, tails are wagging all around you. There is a wall where dog owners sit while their dogs greet each other. A long path leads through wildflowers along the gorgeous dunes. In spring the dunes are covered in little bouquets of yellow flowers. Palm trees and beautiful gnarled trees are a pretty sight. The channel looks lovely in the distance.
At the beach area, you will find the typical grungy sand and views of the pier. The pier is currently closed. Many young couples hang out at this beach. There is a huge paw print on the ground, and concrete benches to sit and take in the scene. Kids love to play on the rocks by the jetties or wade at the shore. Surfers in long wetsuits (the water is cold even in summer) come with short boards and check out the waves. There are sand volleyball courts. It is often foggy here, especially in the warm months when the hot desert air creates lots of fog in San Diego. Come in early winter for blue skies. There are many homeless people at this beach, in the parking lot area, and in the neighborhood- some have been in news stories of crimes near Hodad's on Newport Ave.
For a more beautiful spot, check out Sunset Cliffs nearby, an eleven minute drive south. And after, walk the Point Loma neighborhood, having a treat at Peace Pies. Liberty Station also has some cafes with frequent live music and Stone Brewing with its lovely garden.
Dog Beach is located at 5156W W Point Loma Blvd, San Diego, CA 92107. There is a large, free parking lot.
