Spanish Village is one of the loveliest and most unusual parts of Balboa Park because of its brightly colored clay tiles on the ground. They look wonderful in photos! There is a heart sculpture, perfect for selfies. Mesquite trees frame the photos, and in summer there are purple Jacaranda trees in bloom.
A coffee stand called Daniel's Coffee with good smoothies makes this a nice spot to stop and have a rest.
You can walk around, browsing the galleries and gift shops. There are even classes to take!
Check out the San Diego Mineral and Gem Society, a small museum with beautiful gems inside and a blue fountain with Spanish tiles outside. Make sure you buy a smooth rock like a rose quartz at the gift shop, something you will always enjoy once home.
There are clean restrooms in Spanish Village.
Just around the corner from Spanish Village is the Balboa Park Carousel, a favorite with kids. It was built in 1910, and is a beauty!
Cross Park Blvd to check out the Rose Garden (especially in late spring or early summer) and Desert Garden.
San Diego Mineral and Gem Society Museum is located at 1770 Village Pl Mosque Exhibit, San Diego, CA 92101. Open daily 11-4. Entrance is free. There is also a gift shop where you can buy rocks and gems.
You can park in the San Diego Zoo parking lot or any of the free parking lots in Balboa Park.
