It's nice to stop for lunch in Felton town, deep in the forest, fifteen minutes inland from Santa Cruz. There are many charming cafes, and beautiful walks you can do after your meal such as the Ox Trail to Garden of Eden. Driving through the misty pine tree forest is a wonderful feeling!
It's fun to walk around the one block of cafes and gift shops on Highway 9. There is a huge redwood tree with a historic plaque and a deck built around it, near White Raven Coffee and its Western storefront. The Grove Cafe and Bakery, in a half-timbered house, is an adorable spot with pretty decor and a back patio- we enjoyed a cookie here while looking out at the street and inside at the mushrooms and daisies wallpaper. Some other places to eat that you can try are: The Cremer House Alehouse in a historic building, Wild Roots Market & Bakery Natural Foods, and Redwood Pizzeria. Felton Music Hall is a cool space with live music.
After, check out Felton Covered Bridge County Park, which has a large playground, lawn, and tall covered bridge.
Another lovely forest town nearby is Scotts Valley.
To see more redwoods, check out the University of California Santa Cruz campus, a gorgeous place to walk around on wooden boardwalks under the tall trees. Land of Medicine Buddha Retreat Center, in Soquel, the hills above Capitola, is open to the public- here you can walk under the redwoods admiring the amazing temple, statues, and prayer wheels.
