Foothill neighborhood has narrow tree-lined streets with historic homes (some like gingerbread houses) and views of Cerro San Luis and Bishop Peak. At the southern end is a sweet deli, Lincoln Market & Deli. Two of the best streets to walk along are Broad Street and Chorro Street, starting at Meinecke Ave and heading south. Make sure you take the side street, Murray Ave, which has a sidewalk in the middle of the road! The sidewalk has a tree canopy over it, with varying trees, such as canary palms and other gorgeous trees. The scenery varies continually on these streets, making for an interesting walk. There are houses of many different architectural styles, with different gardens. The trees look like North California, the desert, and South California, sometimes even Hawaii! It's blissful to walk along on a sunny day, enjoying the colors all around you. Broad Street has the most car noise. For some wonderful, quiet streets head over to Lincoln Street, and its adorable side streets with 1930s cottages and views of Madonna Mountain: Mission, Venable, Center, and Mountain View streets. There is also an adorable park here on Mission Street that is enchanting to kids, called Anholm Park.
Take a break from your walk at Lincoln Deli where you can order a sandwich on delicious Dutch Crunch bread, the famous bread from Back Porch Bakery. Their sandwiches are big, but you can order a half sandwich if you'd like. You can enjoy your sandwich on their outdoor patio under yellow umbrellas with views of the creek and a gorgeous mural. If the sound of cars is too much, they also have nice indoor seating on a very long table, on stools by the window, and at wooden booths, and good music playing from excellent speakers. In the morning you can get a chocolate croissant and hot tea. Their gift shop has toys, kids arts, cards, candles, notebooks, and other great presents! If someone is playing the arcade games, the sound can ruin the vibe.
Walk diagonally across the street to a cute little playground on the creek at North Broad Street Park (533 Broad Street). It has good views of Madonna Mountain and lush vegetation, but freeway noise. There is a rope climby, spinner, and picnic tables, plus a community garden area.
You can also check out the many cafes, coffee shops, and natural grocery stores nearby on Foothill Blvd. The best is Scout Coffee, at University Square Shopping Center, with a huge space with large windows. The decor is lovely and the people are friendly. There are two healthy grocery stores: Lassens Natural Foods (my favorite) and California Fresh Market. Many cafes and snack places are waiting to be tried, including SloDoCo for donuts (it is dark inside and the clientele are grumpy, but there are many flavors of donuts), and Milk In It which has good boba tea and a photo booth.
Because of its proximity to Cal Poly SLO, this neighborhood is full of young people and a happy atmosphere.
You can park on Benton Way, or any other street that doesn't have no parking signs. Walk south on Broad Street or Chorro Street, making sure to walk across Murray Ave on the way.
Lincoln Market & Deli, 496 Broad St, San Luis Obispo. Open Mon-Sat 9-5.
