North Point Natural Area is a point with rocky tidepools at the far north end of Morro Bay. Above it is a homemade hillside garden, where a little path takes you above the tidepools. You can explore both and then take a long beach walk! There are sand dollars galore on this beach!
Come at low tide, as low as possible. I was there during winter king tides, a -7 low tide. I could see rocks of all shapes, whole walls of rock, and wonderful little pools in between! It's fun to see all the sealife in the pools.
As you walk north along the beach, you see amazing yellow cliffs. In late winter and spring they are topped with yellow flowers. There are rocks of all kinds of colors: speckled black and white, blue, yellow. It's a geologist's dream!
From the tidepools you can walk north for 1.5 miles to Toro Creek. If it's flowing a lot, then you have to wade through deep water that might not be clean, in order to walk further along the beach. Four miles north is Cayucos Beach, but the rocky points and creeks block your way.
You can also walk south along the beach. This becomes Cloisters Beach, but there might be creeks blocking your way too. Even more south it becomes Morro Rock Beach.
You can also walk short paths on the hillside above the beach. Wooden stairs (at the beach where you parked your car- see directions below) take you up to these paths that crisscross the cliffs.
Parking your car along Beachcomber Street would also be a nice thing to do in rainy or cold weather, to take in wonderful beach views when it's too cold for a walk.
To explore the tidepools and homemade hillside garden, you can park at 3353 Beachcomber Street along the road. Then walk down the steep sandy path to the beach.
