On both sides of the creek in the San Luis Ranch, or SLO Ranch, neighborhood is a lovely path that runs beside the eucalyptus forest! It is a magical area where rays of light shine through the trees, the cold wind makes beautiful sounds in the forest, and flowers sway in the breeze. You can walk two miles total.
On the north side of the creek, the path leads directly under the eucalyptus trees beside the three-storey townhouses, and there is a play area for kids with a twig-shaped balance beam, bowl-shaped climby, and large round swing for two. People sit here and take in the atmosphere of the forest. When you come to the far north end of the path, you see a view of blue Laguna Lake and majestic Bishop Peak, across Madonna Rd. At building 905 is a gate in the fence where you can take a dirt path into the forest and walk through a clearing in the trees. It's beautiful! Watch out for poison oak in the middle of the path.
Another paved path on the north side of the creek leads between the apartment buildings and the creek, with tall tall eucalyptus trees making wonderful sounds in the wind. Cross the pedestrian bridge over the creek and you come to the longest stretch of path, on the south side of the creek. You can take this path all the way to two huge shopping centers, Madonna Plaza and SLO Promenade shopping plazas. If you take this path in the other direction, it goes behind single family homes. The path is bright concrete, and workout stations are placed along the way. It is best enjoyed in the morning when the homes make shade along the blinding-white concrete.
You can also extend your walk by walking the sidewalks and little paths in between homes within the San Luis Ranch neighborhood.
There are a few things you can do after your walk! Buy a fresh-baked pie at the SLO Ranch Market, have an ice cream at Negranti Ice Cream, have a meal in the food court, enjoy a coffee at Lucy's Coffee, check out the donkeys and alpacas or sit outside at the tables in the sun at SLO Ranch Marketplace.
Kids love the Eucalyptus forest, and after, you can walk over to SLO Ranch Playground to climb the rocketship-like playground, sit on the tractor, and slide down the giant twisty slide!
The east end of the path that is on the southern creek bed leads to the shops at Madonna Plaza and SLO Promenade Center.
The paths begin at the pedestrian bridge near 1820 Haystack Place. There is a path on both sides of the bridge. The path on the north side of the creek has the children's play area with disc swing, and the biggest swath of eucalyptus forest- it is not shown yet on google maps but you can see it on google earth.
