At Lake Los Carneros, there are several wide trails that wind around the lake. Joggers enjoy the peace and quiet away from traffic noise. It can be very hot here as it is sheltered from the breeze. The views of the lemon orchards and the mountains behind the blue lake are pretty. You can walk all the way from La Patera Rd to beautiful Stow House, and it's a great walk! Please don't feed the ducks because it's causing some major problems with the ecology of the area.
The lake was part of the property when the Stow family bought this land in 1871, back in the days when families settled in Goleta to grow lemons and hopefully find their fortune. The Stow family had a gorgeous Victorian house which you can visit (Sat, Sun at 2 & 3pm). The little trinkets from long ago are nice to see: silver hairbrushes, dolls, tea cups. Come at Christmastime when the house is all decked out in Christmas ornaments.
Beside Stow House is the old South Coast Railway Depot. There is a museum with a model rail exhibit which is open Wed-Sun 1-4pm. The best time to come is on their family days when you can ride a mini diesel train and a hand caboose (older kids only), and see many model train sets in action.
For a playground set in a redwood grove that was donated by the Stow family to the county, drive to nearby Stow Grove Park.
A fun place to visit after is Captain Fatty's Brewery, which has a large open-air interior with modern decor. They have delicious brews- I liked their sour beer. People gather here in the afternoon to chat at the abundant tables inside. There is a couch and table with games kids can play such as dominoes.
The lake is behind the railroad museum, at 300 North Los Carneros Road, Goleta, CA 93117. Exit Highway 101 at Los Carneros Rd. Turn towards the mountains. Park in the parking lot for the railroad museum.
Or start at La Patera Rd: Exit Highway 101 at Los Carneros Rd. Turn towards the mountains. Turn right on Calle Real. Turn left on La Patera Ln. Park along the road. There is a wide pathway on your left.

I like this park for walking around, riding the little train, and attending the free summer concerts at the Stow House. BUT PLEASE DON"T feed the ducks. I know it is great fun for kids, and this is a kids focused website, but the ducks displace the native waterfowl, and it invites others to dump off their unwanted pet geese there. The locals have been trying to get ride of the geese for decades.
