Onekahakaha Beach Park is perfect for kids to swim. There is a lava rock breakwater where an old Hawaiian fishpond used to be. Here, kids can swim safely without waves! It is like the ocean swimming pools in Australia, where you can swim in salt water but without waves. This is on the stretch of coastline east of Hilo town where there are many small rocky beaches with natural springs.
There are two parking lots. If you take the right fork to the parking lot on the right you will be closer to the swimming area. Here, families set up large BBQs and picnics under the huge trees and picnic pavilions.
There is a similar place to this on Oahu, where an old fishpond has become a sheltered ocean swimming pool for kids at Waikiki Beach.
Another nice beach, where kids can play in the black sand, is Richardson Ocean Park, a five minute drive east.
For a huge playground, animals, and tropical flowers, check out Pana'ewa Rainforest Zoo and Gardens, which is free to visit!
Onekahakaha Beach Park is located at 74 Onekahakaha Rd, Hilo, HI 96720. There are two parking lots. The one on the right is closest to the ocean swimming pool.
