The Shops at Wailea is a ritzy outdoor mall with all the expensive brands like Gucci and Louis Vuitton. Don't let that deter you though, because it has beautiful public spaces with lawns, flowers, trees, and adirondack chairs in the shade. It's a wonderful place to come in the morning, when shoppers haven't arrived, to get a coffee at Island Vintage Coffee Wailea. Park at the bottom of the south parking lot in the shade of big trees. Then walk through the square arch and you will see the coffee shop on your left. There is plenty of shady seating outside plus lots of seating inside too! My adult son said their acai bowls are the best he's ever tasted. We loved the Haupia Moana Bowl, with a scoop of frozen haupia cream on top speckled with shaved coconut. It is presented with a rich purple orchid. Inside it has local papaya and sugar banana. Oh bliss to sit there and savor it!

Maui gets hot very early in the morning, so come early so that you can get your day started! The coffee shop opens at 6am. It also serves lunch, and is open till 7pm!
There are some good Hawaiian stores at this mall, such as Mele Ukulele, upstairs across from the coffee shop. Honolulu Cookie Company is a great place to get gifts. Their pineapple shortbread cookies are the best flavor, and you can choose as many as you want, in an attractive gift box. Whalers General Store, and ABC Store (upstairs) has more island-themed gifts.
Another amazing thing about this mall are the restaurants that pick up the cool breeze off the ocean yet are easy to park at! Tommy Bahama is my favorite, with the most beautiful balcony ever! It is surrounded by pale green palms, which look so pretty with the brown wicker chairs. Their food is excellent, and the prices are doable.
On the lower level of this mall, Tues/Thurs at 5:30pm, there is a free Polynesian show with hula and Tahitian dance, and on Wed at 4:30pm there is live music.
Wailea is not a walkable area because everything is gated, sadly, and the town is designed for cars (that pollute the island). You might be able to walk to Ulua Beach and Wailea Beach from this mall though. If you walk out to the north parking lot through the square arch by Coldwell Banker, step two steps to the left and then walk straight through the parking lot and through the parking turnstiles, you can take a shady road into the lobby of Wailea Beach Resort Marriott, which leads you to the Wailea Beach Path. You can then walk north to Ulua Beach or a longer walk, south to Wailea Beach.
There isn't much shade on this side of the island (Kihei and Wailea), and you can't access the mountains above the town to go for cooling hikes. You basically only have shadeless beaches, exposed beach paths, and malls, so there is not much to do in the middle of the day except drive very far to other parts of the island.
For more cafes, a coffee shop, boutiques, and a Tuesday morning farmers market, check out Wailea Village Shopping Center, just up the hill.
An excellent aquarium 24 minutes north is Maui Ocean Center, a good place to go in the middle of the day when you've had enough sun.
