Pullen Park is the central park of Raleigh, an enchanting place with lots to do. You can check out the little lake and ride paddle boats on it. There is a turtle sculpture to climb on, and picnic tables by the lake, plus a sweet Andy Griffith sculpture of father and son going fishing. The carousel, inside an air-conditioned pavilion, is gorgeous, and has its own wurlitzer music maker, loud and interesting. Near the playground are kiddie boats that go slowly around. A mini train loops around the park. On a hill there are plenty of trees and picnic pavilions and a good feeling.
The playground is large and modern with tons of room to roam. Kids can choose from many structures on the playground, climbeys of all types, a space net, a spongey hill to run down, a sandy area with four digging devices, a water play area (great on hot summer days), a toddler playground with bouncies and baby swings, and two see saws. What a lovely place to visit!
At Christmastime, Pullen Park is decorated beautifully. Come at night to enjoy the lights in the trees. Reserve far ahead of time to ride the Santa Train.
After, check out the two free museums downtown, the NC Museum of Natural Sciences and the NC Museum of History (a six minute drive east).
If you're hungry, have a delicious arepa at Guasaca Arepas and Salsa Grill (an eleven minute drive northwest). Another option is Cameron Village, a shopping center seven minutes drive away, with many cafes. Or a great choice, drive three minutes east to Morgan Street- older kids will enjoy the classy under-the-sea atmosphere inside Irregardless Cafe.
Pullen Park is located at 520 Ashe Ave, Raleigh, NC 27606. Parking is free.
The carousel opens at 10am, and closes at 6pm October-March and 9pm April-September.
Tickets for carousel (42" to ride alone), train (42" to ride alone), or kiddie boats (30-54" to ride) are $1.50 each. Tickets for paddle boats are $6 per boat, for half an hour (four person maximum allowed on boat).
