Many young people from Utah and the Pacific islands attend Brigham Young University in La'ie, which was built in the 1950s. It's nice to walk the beautiful campus. The campus is mostly flat but is surrounded by mountains. Come in the morning when it's not so hot. You can start on Naniloa Loop and then walk up the grand entrance (Kulanui Street) of the college. Here the palms in gracious rows will delight you, as will the white birds. See the little chapel in the distance, the green grass everywhere, and the amazing mountains. Once you reach campus, enjoy the flowers and plants, and the little courtyards where students study.

While in La'ie you must visit La'ie Point. It's a stunning view in all directions! Also nice is a day spent at the Polynesian Cultural Center learning firsthand from Polynesian people about their culture on various islands. The Polynesian Cultural Center has a marketplace, called Hukilau Marketplace, that you can enter for free- it makes for some fun shopping! One third of BYU students work at the Polynesian Cultural Center.
From La'ie you can either drive down the East coast of Oahu past sweet yet windy beaches all the way. The mountains are amazing on this drive. Or drive north around the North shore to see the famous surfing beaches.
Slightly north of La'ie is an extensive area of food trucks along Kamehameha Hwy. It's quite interesting to visit them and they look magical at night with lights strung above picnic tables. Type Giovanni's Aloha Shrimp into your GPS to find this area.
