Sandoway Discovery Center is a sweet white wooden house across the street from Delray Beach. It was built in 1936 and used as a winter house by a produce businessman.
The reason to come here is to see the Nurse shark feeding (see times below). It's a lot of fun to hear the silly noises they make and to listen to the volunteer's interesting information about them. They are in the house's swimming pool in the back- don't jump in for a swim! There is a canopy over the pool making it bearable in the heat. Other fish in the pool are pufferfish, blue tang, domino damselfish, and porkfish.
The house itself is airy and bright, not dank at all like some historic houses and nature centers. There is a balcony on the second floor with gorgeous views of the turquoise sea. A lovely exhibit about shells takes up the top floor, with amazing shells mostly from Florida. The Caribbean blue display cases are very pretty. Downstairs is a great exhibit with shark mouths from all different types of sharks. The cartilage (not bone) is dried out and therefore stiff, but usually it's flexible so that sharks can get a very good grip when they sink their teeth in! A touch tank appeals to the little kids.
Come here for an enjoyable look around and then go for a dip in the sea at Atlantic Dunes Beach Park (with parking across the street) or the more happening Delray Public Beach! Or grab a bite to eat on Delray Beach's main street Atlantic Ave. Or for an easier place to get a bite to eat, with a big parking lot, check out Delray Place Shopping Center, a modern shopping plaza with cafes and stores.
Sandoway Discovery Center is located at 142 S. Ocean Blvd, Delray Beach FL 33483, call (561) 274-7263.
From S. Ocean Blvd, turn onto Ingraham Ave and then turn right into the parking lot. The parking spots on your right are the ones for the museum and you must get a parking pass when you pay inside the museum.
