Clematis Street is the main street of West Palm Beach town, where young people and business people hang out. The umbrellas, bikes, flags, palms, and historical architecture are colorful and inviting. Sidewalk cafes give an opportunity to dine among the bustle. There's city hall, with its spiffy courtyard. Follow it into the city library or the attractive Palm Beach Photographic Center where you can duck into the small free museum and see their latest traveling exhibit.
On its eastern end, Clematis Street makes a fork, with a Parisian-style park called City Commons in the middle. Here wrought-iron circles surround trees in a large plaza where kids run around and adults gather to chat, all with the blue water of the intracoastal waterway in view. The Saturday morning (Oct to May, 9am-1pm) Green Market is held here, as is Clematis By Night with free concerts by the fountain from 6-9pm on Thursday nights.
ER Bradley's saloon is a great dining option at the eastern end of Clematis Street. Sit outside by the grass shack bar and enjoy good, inexpensive food across from the waterfront boardwalk. Walk the beautiful waterfront boardwalk south, continue under the bridge, and walk further along the intracoastal on Flagler Drive.
I love the amount of European influence in Southeast Florida. Walk two blocks down Olive Street to Paris Bakery (closed on Sundays) and enjoy the romantic casual atmosphere inside, or sit outside and admire the architecture. The lively, welcoming owner is from Cannes. After enjoying a pain au chocolat (chocolate croissant) and cup of tea, you can take home a baguette for lunch, still warm from the oven! This made me feel so happy as I was walking down the street back home, warm baguette in hand!
A modern, gorgeous place is Johan Joe's Swedish Coffee House (a few blocks from Clematis Street), where you can sit inside in a large area with huge windows, or outside (which is only shady in the early morning). They have delicious crepes and pastries such as nutella croissants! At lunchtime they have savory crepes, and at dinnertime more expensive meals such as salmon or Nordic hash. This cafe is counter service, which I always prefer. If you come early enough, you can sometimes park right in front of the cafe.
The SkyBike bike rentals all around town don't seem to work. This is a real shame as it would be lovely to rent a bike and ride around on the waterfront or the Lake Trail.
Nearby, check out The Square, an outdoor mall built around sumptuous historical architecture and a fun splash fountain kids love. At night it is amazing here with its lit-up magical tree. It is a short walk up Clematis Street and south on Rosemary Ave to get here or you can take a free trolley from Clematis Street to The Square.
Another youthful place to go is Grandview Public Market, where you can sit outside on their huge, attractive patio. Inside you can choose from many businesses, to buy a drink or food.
While in Palm Beach, don't miss out on Flagler Mansion and Museum, which sits in a blessed spot on the intracoastal waterway by a giant kapuk tree. My daughter still talks about the railcar pavilion here which is all glass.
Norton Museum of Art is an excellent art museum with a small, tropical sculpture garden. From the back of it you can walk one block to the intracoastal along Flagler Drive.
Along Dixie Highway, check out Common Grounds Brew and Roastery, in the Casa Mara apartment complex. It is so nice in there! The seats are soft so you can stay a while. There are big windows with sunlight coming in. They have great tea in glass teapots, and chocolate croissants. And there are lots of young people on the weekend and the music is good! This is across the street from the El Cid neighborhood.
A colorful and beautiful place on a side street off Dixie Hwy is Hive Bakery and Cafe, with seating under green umbrellas and a tropical mural outside. The decor is lime green and classy inside. Their banana bread is delicious. You must get waiter service, but if you want to pay at the counter, you can sit either in the far room or outside. After, you can browse Hive Home, Gift, and Garden next door.
The main strip of West Palm Beach is Clematis St from the waterfront (Flagler Dr) to Quadrille St.
Exit Highway 95 at Okeechobee Blvd and head toward the ocean. Turn left on Olive Ave and after five blocks or more, look for parking along the road. There are parking meters which you can pay with an app.
