It's lovely to sit under the green umbrellas at Baileyana and look out on the vineyards and the adorable morro (volcanic mountain) called Islay Hill. Next to you is the yellow historic schoolhouse with its cute bell tower. Late May to end of September, there is live music and food trucks at noon on Sundays, plus just food trucks on Fridays 12-4. A band called Surfeza played when we were there and it was great! You can enjoy wine by the glass, bottle, or by tasting six different wines for $25. This is very fun, and the wines are varied. Friendly hosts serve you the wine and tell you many interesting facts. You can buy some picnic foods inside the schoolhouse but, oddly, it smelled of sewer in there. On the far end of the wine tasting area, you can play jeu de boules. There is also a trellis with grape vines over picnic tables. On sunny, cool days, this is a pleasant outing. There tends to be more sun in this area than on the coast.
This area grows delicious Chardonnay and Pinot- these grapes like the cool sea air that blows into SLO. Further inland, such as in Paso Robles, bolder grapes are grown.
If you drive toward downtown SLO from Baileyana, you will see four morros lined up, and it's a very cute sight! They are: Islay Hill, Righetti Hill, Cerro San Luis, and Bishop's Peak.
For whiskey tasting, check out Rod and Hammer Rock, also in SLO.
Baileyana Winery is located at 5828 Orcutt Rd, San Luis Obispo, CA 93401. There are plenty of parking spots once you enter the driveway.
