Pine Ave Beach is a perfect spot on Anna Maria Island. You can grab food at one of the cafes on Pine Ave and then walk to the beach to have a sunset picnic. The sand awes you when you arrive. It is fine and white, like snow! It crunches under your feet! The dunes look sweet with golden sea oats. Sit near the water to try to avoid bug bites from mosquitoes and no-see-ums. It's best to come on breezy days when the wind scares the bugs away.

The sunsets are just amazing, lighting the sky pink, purple, and orange. It's blissful to watch the red ball of the sun make its way slowly below the horizon.
It's nice to stroll along the shore, and the hard-packed sand makes it easy on your body. In summer and early fall there are often dead fish and tube worms along the shore, making it a bit stinky and disgusting. This is caused by red tide. I usually only swim on the Atlantic side of Florida since the water doesn't smell on that side. But plenty of people do swim on Anna Maria Island. Winter is the safest time to swim, when the water is cooler and has less bacteria.
The beach is lined with pretty beach houses beyond the idyllic dunes.
After watching the sunset, walk along Pine Ave to Anna Maria City Pier, on the intracoastal, and enjoy the blue-lit Skyway Bridge, waves lapping the pier, and live music! It is bliss and the wind keeps mosquitoes away.
On the way to Anna Maria Island, immediately before the bridge to the island, check out Floridays Woodfire Grill, next to the tall pale blue and white Compass Hotel. This is a lovely place to eat! The breeze is very strong, keeping you cool even outdoors at lunchtime. You can eat right on the water. The food is good and the staff are friendly. It's a super atmosphere to be on the intracoastal!
