The best bike riding I've done (besides Lord Howe Island in Australia) was at Hilton Head Island in South Carolina! Here you will find shady bike paths under trees strung with Spanish moss. In early springtime, abundant azalea flowers add bursts of color everywhere. Rent a nicely tuned bike at Forest Beach Surf and Cycle to explore the public part of Hilton Head Island. You can bike to Coligny Beach Park, and along the most beautiful area of the bike paths, South Forest Beach Drive. We then went along Cordillo Parkway and then north on Pope Ave. Here you pass Holy Family Catholic Church, a pond, and a statue of Mary. A little further north you go over a boardwalk with bright duck weed and turtles below! We then took Office Park Road past a college with a large pond. Marleys Island Grille looks like a cute place to stop for a meal, with outdoor seating and a sweet setting.
There's lots more biking you can do on the island, with dedicated public bike paths. See the map here!
Another great place to visit on Hilton Head Island is the Coastal Discovery Museum, where you can walk their gorgeous grounds on boardwalks over the salt marsh.
It's also nice to have a meal at Harbour Town and climb the small lighthouse while enjoying the displays along the wall!
