It's wonderful to visit the grounds of the Coastal Discovery Museum in Hilton Head Island. Here you can walk along three boardwalks that stretch out into the salt marsh. From your elevated vantage point over the marsh you can see cannonball jellyfish and tiny crabs. You also see birds. The salt marsh is so lovely, and you can enjoy the sweet air that blows by while looking at the homes surrounded by oak trees and Spanish moss.

Keep walking on the grounds of the museum and you come to some pots with tiny venus fly trap plants. You pass a beautiful camellia garden with camellia of many colors. And you come to a giant piece of a rocket, an X-37B Orbital Test Vehicle, that was found on the beach nearby! There's something for everyone! My husband loved seeing this rocket piece! Lastly, you come to a horse by some cute historic stables that look more like a house! Walk back under the shady oak trees draped in Spanish moss.
At the museum, there are two rooms with some explanations about wildlife in the area, paintings by local artists, a diorama of oystering in South Carolina around the turn of the century, plus a kids room with a horseshoe crab in a tank, and turtle nest exhibit.
This museum and its grounds are a great place to visit when you first arrive at Hilton Head Island, since it is located near the entrance. You can stretch your legs after a long drive! After, eat at Crazy Crab Jarvis Creek, which has a gorgeous location on the salt marsh, good food, and a playground for the kids with adirondack chairs nearby! It is a six minute drive away.
On Hilton Head Island, kids will also love Coligny Beach Park and the shops nearby, bike riding along the bike paths, and climbing the small lighthouse at Harbour Town.
