Heathcote Botanical Gardens is a tropical paradise where you'll be inspired by the unusual flowers, lush vegetation, and themed garden areas. Our favorite is the Reflection Garden, which has an amazing whirlpool fountain and the sweetest gate. The Bonsai Garden is a large collection of strange Bonsai trees. Smell the delightful lemon balm in the Herb Garden. My daughter loved the Japanese Garden with its little spirit houses and stream full of fish. Another garden has a tiny waterfall and lush tropical vegetation. There is an area with a large lawn and old tree surrounded by caladiums. How lovely their thin, soft leaves are! Walk under leafy archways, and watch butterflies flutter by. Everywhere you look there is a hanging basket or something pretty. Come here and stroll around with your partner, friend or children- you will all have a wonderful time!
At Christmastime, come to the garden at night to see the lights!
For a bite to eat, check out sleepy Fort Pierce town, a seven minute drive away. It's lovely to sip a cup of tea at Old Florida Coffee Company and then walk around the Fort Pierce City Marina. You can also check out the Manatee Observation Center, to learn about manatees, and A. E. Backus Museum, to see some Florida art by Backus and the Highwaymen, with nice use of light.
While in the area, check out the Smithsonian Aquarium- located in a gorgeous spot- and behind it the fantastic St Lucie County History Center. Drive to the very end to Jetty Park, to see the blue water from the jetty.
For a popular garden just twenty minutes drive away check out Port St. Lucie Botanical Gardens, which has less mosquitoes because it's in a pine forest. It has lots of little areas to explore, plus an indoor pavilion with good AC and lovely views. It connects to a modern river boardwalk that is breezy and fun to stroll.
