It's wonderful to enjoy the wide open spaces north of Hobe Sound Beach. You can walk for seven miles on the shore north of Hobe Sound Beach! Almost as soon as you leave the popular part of the beach, the sand becomes pristine of all trash or debris, and an endless scene of beauty stretches before you! The wide open sky, the clean grey sand, little shells dotted here and there, and the waves criss-crossing each other at the shore. There is no one around and it feels almost like you have a desert landscape to yourself, except with the calming roar of the waves. Occasionally an ironwood tree casts shade on the beach in the afternoon, if you want to sit in the shade to rest. But you will need a wide hat for your walk because it is sunny! Also, you won't want to sit too long unless it's very windy because the proximity to a huge mangrove preserve makes this beach abundant with mosquitoes and no-see-ums. But if it's windy and the middle of the day, you are safe!
First you will be in front of Jupiter Island houses- this area is called Bonair Beach. Then, after 1.75 miles, you will reach the beach access points for Hobe Sound National Wildlife Refuge (you can also park in this parking lot but you must pay $5, by honor system). Then you will have empty beach without any houses or people. If you walk seven miles you will come to the end of the island, and will be able to look across the inlet at Hutchinson Island. Someone walked this entire length for google maps, because you can see a streetview of it the whole way along!
The sand is hard-packed at the shore, and quite flat, so you won't be stretching one leg much more than the other. Usually beach walks are quite strenuous, but for this reason, it is easy!
After your walk, treat yourself to a tea or coffee in Hobe Sound town at Hobe Sound Social and Coffee, which has cute outdoor seating. The owners are friendly to talk to. It is a four minute drive from the beach, or a 22 minute walk, mostly under the banyan trees. It is open weekdays 7-3, Sat 7-12, Sun 8-12.
For a nice hike on white sand to the top of a hill, check out Hobe Sound Hill Trail. It also has a yellow sand dune!
Also check out Hobe Sound Nature Center, a cute place with amazing animals and friendly docents. It is located on a ridge with stairs down to a white sand intracoastal beach, a tropical paradise.
Park your car at Hobe Sound Beach for free. If the parking lot is full, on the weekend you can park across the street at the town hall. Otherwise, park at Hobe Sound National Wildlife Refuge, for $5 by honor system. From the beach, walk as far north as you want to go!
