Hobe Sound is a small beach town that has been growing recently because it has the last land close to the beach in South Florida. Bridge Road leads down to Hobe Sound Beach, a beach with glorious blue-green water and dark grey sand. A long walk under a magical canopy of banyan trees leads down to the beach. The beach is on Jupiter Island, one of the wealthiest zip codes in the US, where Tiger Woods lives. Unfortunately, it is hard to walk around Jupiter Island because no parking is allowed along the roads and the sidewalk starts a mile south of the beach. Still, it's worth it to park at Hobe Sound Beach and walk beside the cars for a mile so that you can walk the sidewalk on South Beach Road, past the marina and golf club, and onto the Ramble. This is a pedestrian-only street blessed with gorgeous landscaping and inspiring tropical breezes. You can also park at Hobe Sound Beach and walk (no sidewalk) on North Beach Road to a more secluded beach, Nathaniel Reed Beach.
There is a row of boutiques and cafes on Dixie Hwy near Bridge Rd, including Hobe Sound Social and Coffee, a friendly, modern coffee shop where you can sit outside. If you want shade, the outdoor seating is best after 11am. They have cake donuts from Jupiter Donuts, which are delicious! For lunch, you can have a bacon cheddar jalapeno, or ham and cheese, croissant. Their pastries are delivered fresh on Monday, Wednesday, Friday, and Saturday. Try their banana nut muffins- yum! They also have a large selection of vegan and gluten-free muffins. Their cinnamon spice hot tea is very delicious. This area is bustling with cool people on Fridays and weekends.
Kork, a waiter-service cafe a little further down, has outdoor seating, an outdoor bar, plus a nicely-decorated interior with many little lights. Kork has a farmer's market on Saturdays from 12-5 (call to make sure it's still happening).
These cafes are near a lovely walk at Hobe Sound Hill Trail. Also near here is Greenfield Park, a little park on the water with a pier, coconut trees galore, fresh breezes, and views of Jupiter Island.
Hobe Sound has a quaint old-fashioned bible school, Hobe Sound Bible College, where you can find a christian bookstore with a good kids section. To get there, on your way back from Hobe Sound Beach, turn right on Gomez Ave. After 500 meters, there is a sign for the bookstore on your right. You take the next driveway and it winds around. Park your car near the Fine Arts building- you will see the bookstore to the left of it, with purple bougainvillea out front. The kids section has stuffed animals, art supplies, books and games. Open M-F 9:30-4:30.
HSBC Coffee Shoppe is modern and beautiful, with golden lighting and a quiet, friendly ambience. It feels much nicer than going to Starbucks. It is open M-F 7am-4:45pm, closed for an hour at noon for lunch. It is also closed during college holidays. Here you can sit on the attractive wooden chairs, and look out the huge windows at the fountain and flower pots. They have delicious lattes! We had pumpkin and cinnamon lattes on a rainy day and it was so nice! The college students who study at the long booths are very welcoming when you enter- this makes the coffee shop a nice afterschool outing to do with your child. To find the coffee shop on your way back from Hobe Sound Beach, turn right on Gomez Ave. A few feet after SE Bethel Way, turn right into the parking lot. You will see the fountain and Addison Student Center, where the coffee shop is located. The coffee shop is set back from other buildings, hidden- look for the fountain in front!
Along Bridge Rd, further back from the beach, are more cafes. Taylor Beach House Cafe is a beautiful, modern one, under a thatched roof, with elegant lighting and excellent live music most days except Sundays 6-9pm (check their facebook page). You wait for your table at a fire pit. It's lovely!
On Hercules Ave, find a peaceful garden at Saint Christopher Church, which is open in the mornings. Palm trees rustle pleasantly as you walk the square courtyard stopping at each statue. There are statues of Saint Patrick, Saint Anthony, Saint Anne, Our Lady of Lourdes, Padre Pio, and Archangel Michael with his sword (he will really help you!). You can light a candle (there is a donation box to pay for the candle), and say a prayer. Look up at the vibrant gold tower. Joy! This is a lovely activity to do with your kids, to instill a feeling of always having a place to go if they need peace and comfort. You can let them choose which statue they want to light a candle beneath.
Take your kids to the playground at Pettway Park! The park has all the modern equipment, such as a mommy and baby swing, a spinner, an egg to hide in, and a play structure decorated with a big frog and colorful flowers. There is another cute playground at Zeus Park, with a spinner, log tunnel, and an oasis of palm trees.
Driving north on Federal Hwy, you will see on your right The Marketplace Restaurant (M-S 9-9, closed Sun), with bright orange umbrellas outside. It has wood-fired pizza with delicious sauce and crust, flat crunchy chocolate chip cookies, croissants, and pastry items, plus Italian foods to buy. The seating on long, cushioned, raised benches is really comfortable, and the music is chill. The staff are friendly. Everything is modern and beautiful inside, and there is also a large outdoor seating area with plants.
On the corner of Federal Hwy and Seabranch Blvd is Bagel Bistro, with French chairs outside in a cool morning breeze in winter. There is plenty of shade in the morning, plus umbrellas for shade all day long. They have fresh bagels. It's nice to go for a walk here on Seabranch Blvd.
Heritage Ridge is another nice neighborhood walk with some hills. And Gomez Ave, by some gated communities, is a pretty stretch to walk, ending up at Peck Lake Park where you can walk to the intracoastal. Seabranch Preserve State Park has unique vegetation and a wide path, but not water views. Hobe Sound Hill Trail, officially called Hobe Sound Scrub Preserve, has a yellow sand dune, and white sand along the hilly trail, plus wooden workout stations.
For an intracoastal beach that is magical check out the beach below Hobe Sound Nature Center. This nature center is super fun to visit with kids. It has animals such as a skunk and baby gator, and friendly docents.
If you drive south on Dixie or Federal toward Tequesta, you will pass Blue Pointe Bar and Grill, an incredible place on the water with the most amazing views and breeze, and live music at night.
Port Salerno, a rustic waterfront area, is next door to Hobe Sound, and you can enjoy excellent live music on the water at Fysh and browse the shops next door. District Cafe is an upscale restaurant with beautiful landscaping of magnolia trees and palms.
Two gorgeous parks are nearby: Twin Rivers Park with its wooden boardwalks beside the expansive intracoastal where boats glide by, and popular Sandsprit Park- do not miss this one! It is stunning! The end of Cove Rd at Cove Road Park is especially nice at sunset, when you can watch birds swooping for fish in the intracoastal.
Hobe Sound is situated between Stuart, a happening town with lots of entertainment and restaurants and a long, amazing boardwalk over the river, in the north and Tequesta town / Jupiter, a wealthy and beautiful town, in the south. Jonathon Dickinson State Park, a huge piece of land with pontoon boat tours past giant alligators, divides Hobe Sound from Tequesta.
Hobe Sound town is located along Bridge Rd, Dixie Hwy, and Federal Hwy, with no real main strip.
