Harmony town is an adorable spot along Highway 1. You can have a lunch of Moroccan chickpea stew at their food truck or an ice cream at their creamery truck (Sat and Sun 11:30-4:30, weather permitting). There are picnic tables under umbrellas in a countryside setting. Spend time in their glassworks store admiring the amazing creations, such as glass chimes, flowers, hearts, necklace pendants, garden sticks, hummingbirds, and waves. You might see someone glass-blowing. The pottery and leather stores are also nice to browse. You can buy a flower made of leather. The historic post office is near the food truck- it's interesting to walk inside. In October, a scarecrow of Edgar Allen Poe is seated in the post office side room. There is also a rustic coffee shop with a green brick wall, and tables outside in the courtyard. My favorite part of this area is the Irish chapel. When you walk in, you instantly feel peace wash over you! Its thick walls- it used to be a cheese cellar- make it a cooling escape. Its door is made of wood carved in a Celtic design, and is in the form of a wine cask, from its cheese and wine tasting days. Inside there are pews and green stained glass. What a beautiful feeling! Irish instrumental music plays on a stereo.
There is also a winery up on the hill called Harmony Cellars, with a gorgeous balcony overlooking the valley. They have summer twilight concerts with food trucks, May 30-Sept 12, 5:15-7:15pm.
The town of Harmony grew up around a dairy founded in 1869. The dairy farmers were competitive, leading to a shooting death. After this tragedy, a truce was called in 1907 and all agreed to live in a collaborative town which they named Harmony. Highway 1 passed right through the town, and travelers stopped to enjoy the most delicious buttermilk from the Harmony Valley Cooperative Dairy. The village had bunk houses for the employees, a general store, a livery and stable, blacksmith, feed store, post office, and school house. Hearst frequently stopped here to buy the finest butter and cheese on the way back to his castle.
Nearby, Harmony Headlands State Park Trail is a hike that takes two miles until you reach the sea. It is best in the late morning, after the fog has cleared but the insane afternoon wind has not begun to funnel through the hills. If it is too windy, hike at Estero Bluffs and see a shipwreck. Then you can explore Cayucos town. If it's springtime, check out the sweet pea flowers in Cayucos at Whale Rock Reservoir.
If you're heading inland on Highway 46 toward Paso Robles, stop at Green Valley Viewing Point, and then Jack Creek Farms (Fri-Sun 10-5, seasonally).
If you're heading north on Highway 1 to Cambria, stop at Fiscalini Ranch Preserve for a hike.
Harmony town is much warmer than Cambria because the mountains block the harsh sea wind and fog.
Harmony is located along Highway 1, between Cambria and Cayucos/Morro Bay. The address is 2180 Old Creamery Rd, Harmony.
Harmony Glassworks, open daily 9-5.
Harmony Cellars, 3255 Harmony Valley Rd, Harmony. Open daily, times vary.
Harmony Chapel, open daily 9-5.
The sign on the creamery food truck said it is open Sat and Sun 11:30-4:30, weather permitting. On google maps, it says Wed-Mon 11:30-4:30, closed Tuesday. So I'm not sure which is right.
