As you drive to Jack Creek Farms (open Fri-Sun, seasonally) on Highway 46 from Paso Robles, you are surprised by the lovely countryside. It feels like you're near Santa Rosa in North California because of the little hill covered in bright foliage. Outside the farm store are cute sights everywhere, with flower baskets and wagons. Inside the farm store, everything is attractively displayed. Kids will love the selection of farm animal stuffies! You can do a Jack Creek Honey, or oil and vinegar (with sourdough crackers), guided tasting for $6 each. This is fun because they tell you about the farm and also some cooking tips! If you have little kids or just want to take some colorful selfies, don't miss the Happy Acres section, for $15 each. Here you will find cozy imaginary play areas: hay horses to ride, a musical station with pots and pans mounted on a wall, a lasso practise area, a vegetable stand with plastic vegetables in color-coded trays, a lemonade stand, a chicken coop with chicken stuffies, a haystack, a wooden train, a tire tunnel, an old time laundry playhouse where you can hang clothes on a line, a maze, a flower wagon, a corn bin to sit or scoop in, a puppet theater, and a pretend cafe. You can also look at the chickens, rabbits, and beautifully-cared-for goats ($3 for a bag of goat feed). Everything is pristine! And all the while you are looking up at leafy vistas of the little hill.
There is also a u-pick for berries, peaches, apples, onions, lavender, cucumbers, pumpkins, Christmas trees, depending on the season, and whether they have sold out. Ask them what is current, and they'll give you the supplies and point you to the spot to start picking.
School children enjoy field trips here in October, and photographers come here to do family portraits with cute backdrops.
Check their website before coming, because the farm is open seasonally depending on the month and weather.
The climate is lovely in this spot, sunny but getting closer to the ocean.
After stopping at the farm, continue on Highway 46 to enjoy incredible views up above layers of hills, with the ocean ahead! Stop at Green Valley Viewing Point to take in the views slowly. There is no sign, but just a dirt parking lot. Google maps will guide you there, and you'll have to pull off while going the hair-raising highway speed.
Continue on and turn left on Highway 1, stopping at another adorable area that is very worth it, Harmony Creamery, Glassworks, and Town. You can eat at their food truck or ice cream truck at picnic tables under umbrellas in a countryside setting. I absolutely loved their colorful glassworks store, and chapel, a former cheese cellar, where you feel the cool air from its thick walls and sense peace wash over you.
Then take a short hike to a shipwreck at Estero Bluffs. And continue your drive back, on Highway 1. We started our drive in San Luis Obispo. This is an awesome loop drive with gorgeous stops!
Jack Creek Farms is located at 5000 Highway 46, Templeton CA, call (805) 239-1915.
Cost for guided tastings is $6 per person. Cost to enter Happy Acres imaginary play area is $15 per person.
