University Heights Park, Hilo

University Heights Park is at the top of Hilo town near UH Hilo. It is a quiet park in a neighborhood, and has the greenest grass and a little hill to run up. Kids love to run up here! You can see gorgeous views of Mauna Kea from the top. There is plenty of lawn for picnics, plus some shade under a tree. Sometimes you can see geese walking near the park. There is a baseball diamond, short walking path, restrooms, and a large picnic pavilion. This park is fenced.

A one minute drive away is UH Hilo Botanical Garden. It is a small garden, but it's lovely to see the large variety of bromeliads and cycads there. 
Kaumana Caves Lava Tube is a fascinating place to visit, and only eleven minutes drive away.
While up this way, you can also do the short yet difficult Wai'ale Falls Hike. Or visit Rainbow Falls and next to it, Boiling Pots Lookout.
