Bird Rock is a cute neighborhood in La Jolla with a main strip full of cafes. The cafes are a few blocks back from a beautiful coastline of steep cliffs and crashing waves. Bird Rock itself is a rock that juts out of the sea, with pelicans and birds galore gathering around it. You can eat at a cafe and then walk down to Bird Rock to enjoy the sights.
My favorite cafe is Seaside Surf Cafe, with an expansive outdoor seating area with small trees, vines, wooden tables and stripey umbrellas. Get a delicious tropical smoothie there and sit on their patio watching people walk by. Wayfarer Bread & Pastry has yummy ham croissants but no seating. You walk past a colorful mural of plants and flowers and under an archway to go inside. Bird Rock Coffee started in this area, and you can have a cup of coffee in their original store which has a long wooden bench in the open window. It has a mix of local photos on the wall. There are many other attractive eateries, with strung lights and plants, to check out.
The main strip is La Jolla Blvd, and along it are benches decorated in shiny mosaic tiles with inspirational quotes.
After eating, walk toward the water, and then check out all the amazing lookouts over the sea, from north to south. La Jolla Hermosa Park is just a small lookout with a white fence, flowers, and views of a rocky cove. Bird Rock Vista Point has two lookout areas, one lower and one higher, over a rock that juts out of the sea- stand for a while and check out the interesting interactions between the birds and the pelicans swooping down from the sky. Calumet Park, my favorite, has a lovely lawn where people picnic, amazing views, and cliffs covered in ice plant in the spring. Pacific Beach Point (called Bird Rock Waterfront on google maps) has views of Pacific Beach Pier and a staircase down to a beach of gigantic pebbles. It's fun to walk past the houses and their pretty gardens along Calumet Ave and the other waterfront streets, especially in spring.
The cafes in Bird Rock are located along the 5500 and 5600 blocks of La Jolla Blvd.
