There are large swaths of shade under the redwood trees by the sand volleyball court, in the redwood grove, and on the short trail under eucalyptus trees behind the tennis courts.
The first mile of this hike has abundance shade until late morning, from the canyon walls. You do need to walk in a bit of sun from the parking though.
This bike path is not completely shady, but it does have patches of shade during the first half. And Secret Garden is a shady spot to buy a cool drink along the way.
There are small patches of shade here and there at the playground. Also, you can spend half an hour inside the aquarium. And have a cup of tea at Hula Hut, looking out at the ocean.
There is shade under the amazing eucalyptus trees, and a cool breeze off the ocean.
There is shade under the pier, and on hot days, many people gather here to hang out rather than get sunburned on the beach.
The butterfly grove is very shady and you can park right by it, along Highway 1, also in the shade.
Downtown San Luis Obispo has streets lined with tall trees, so there is shade. You also get shade from the buildings. It is in the warmer part of town though, so hot days aren't great here.
The mosaic sculptures play area for kids is shady in winter when the sun is low, because there is a building to the south of it that blocks the sun. The walkway has occasional shade in the morning, from the buildings.
The eucalyptus trees provide some shade. The mission is located downtown, where the streets have shade from tall trees and from the buildings. It is a hot area though. The creek below the mission also has some shade.
Outside KBRG Coffee and also Ancient Owl Beer Garden, there is shade in the afternoon from the buildings.
The sunken garden at City Hall in Atascadero has wonderful tall trees that provide shade on the lawn. There is also shade outside Amstrdm Coffee in the morning, across from the sunken garden. Bramble Pie Co has shady outdoor seating in the morning. Atascadero is a hot, inland area in summertime though.
Downtown City Park in Paso Robles has shade canopies over the playground, and also huge old trees that provide shade all over the large park. It's wonderful! Paso Robles is an inland town though- hot in summertime.
Tall trees provide nice patches of shade on the lawn. There is also a huge concert pavilion that you can sit under. No shade makes it to the playground though. There is hardly any shade in Arroyo Grande town.
